Airey Miller worked alongside the contractor, Stonewest, on this major project of external repair, restoration and redecoration, and ensured all key health and safety issues required of a functioning public building were addressed. As a Grade I listed building, we collaborated closely with the main contractor and other consultants to ensure work was undertaken in full accordance with the requirements of English Heritage.
One complication on the project was keeping the building open and safely accessible to both visitors and staff while the work was carried out. This involved careful negotiation with the principal contractor to agree safe systems of work and the provision of method statements.
Large areas of defective stonework had to be removed, then replaced with new stoke ground stone. A further hazard was the repair and redecoration of the windows; it was an English Heritage requirement that they were redecorated with lead based paint.
